Privacy in the era of algorithms

In this talk, we will provide a crisp introduction to data protection, specifically the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023. We will discuss the principles of data protection, the rights of individuals, obligations of organizations, special provisions for sensitive personal data, data transfer and storage requirements. We will also understand the intersection and role of AI on privacy. Finally, we will wrap up the talk with the impact of the act on businesses and stakeholders including penalties and consequences for non-compliance of the act.

Dr Kshitiz Verma

Advocate, Rajasthan High Court B.Tech. CSE, IIT Kanpur MS, Ph.D. Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain LLB, University of Raja

Dr. Kshitiz Verma is an Advocate at the Rajasthan High Court with a strong interdisciplinary background spanning computer science, artificial intelligence, and law. He holds a PhD from Universidad Carlos III of Madrid, Spain, a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kanpur, and an LL.B. from Rajasthan University, Jaipur. He serves on the advisory board of a University of Cambridge project on EU AI laws and is a SERB–TARE Fellow at IIT Kanpur. Since 2019, his research has regularly featured in the training programs for High Court judges at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, and he actively teaches police officers, public prosecutors, and judges. His course on Large Language Models has been well received by students across institutions, including IISc and multiple IITs. Dr. Verma’s research focuses on applying computer science, AI, and law to improve access to justice in India, as well as on legal frameworks governing AI and digital technologies. He also runs a YouTube channel where he teaches deep learning in Hindi.
