Challenge Overview

Bengaluru has consistently ranked among the top ten most congested cities in the world. One potential solution? A public transport system that is accessible, affordable, efficient, and sustainable – with smooth multimodal integration.

Sponsored by BMTC, Namma Yatri, the Centre for Data for Public Good, CiSTUP, and IISc, and hosted on IEEE DataPort, the multi-phase Bengaluru Multimodal Journey Challenge, 2025 encourages real-world applications of AI, machine learning, and optimisation in urban mobility.

What is the contest?

The challenge calls for innovative, data-driven solutions that improve how people move across Bengaluru using buses, autorickshaws, and more. Deep dive into real-world transport data to simulate and solve the city’s multimodal journey puzzle.

Prizes

Phase 1:

Prizes up to INR 2.5 Lakhs

Phase 2:

Prizes up to INR 4 Lakhs

(All prizes are subject to applicable tax deductions)

Who can participate?

Coders, students, data scientists, researchers, transport engineers, urban planners, and anyone with a passion for solving mobility challenges in India. Teams of up to 5 members can register.

Phase 1:

Use live BMTC and Namma Yatri trip data to:

  • Predict bus arrival times
  • Estimate travel times for autorickshaw trips

Phase 2:

Recommend best multimodal routes (bus + auto) between points in the city, optimising for both time and cost.

Participants will be judged on prediction accuracy, novelty of their solution, and real-world feasibility.
