Welcome to the third edition of the Symposium on Data for Public Good – India’s premier platform dedicated to exploring how data, technology, and governance can work together to create inclusive, secure, and sustainable future.

Organised by the Centre of Data for Public Good (CDPG) at IISc Bengaluru, this two-day event convenes leaders from government, academia, startups, and civil society to accelerate innovation in public digital infrastructure and data-driven policy.

Challenge Overview

Bengaluru has consistently ranked among the top ten most congested cities in the world. One potential solution? A public transport system that is accessible, affordable, efficient, and sustainable – with smooth multimodal integration.

Organised by BMTC, Namma Yatri, the Centre of Data for Public Good and, CiSTUP at IISc, and hosted on IEEE DataPort, the Bengaluru Multimodal Journey Challenge, 2025 encourages real-world applications of AI, machine learning, and optimisation in urban mobility.

Eligibility

  • Open to residents of India.
  • Teams can have up to five members.
  • A given person can be a member of only one team.
  • At least one team member must be physically present at the final demo venue.

Rules of Participation

  • Register and sign up on IEEE DataPort.
  • Only one account per team.
  • Code and data sharing outside of the team is not permitted.
  • One submission per team; the last submission will be considered if multiple are made.

Data Access and Use

  • Data is for competition use only and must remain private.
  • Any personal identifiable information in the data must not be revealed.
  • Open Source code can be used, provided such use is permitted by the owners of the open source code.

  • First Prize First Prize: Rs. 2.5 lakhs
  • Second Prize Second Prize: Rs. 1.5 lakhs
  • Special Recognition Special recognition prize of Rs. 25,000 to the remaining three finalists.

What is the contest?

The challenge calls for innovative, data-driven solutions that improve how people move across Bengaluru using buses, autorickshaws, and more. Deep dive into real-world transport data to simulate and solve the city’s multimodal journey puzzle.

Who can participate?

Coders, students, data scientists, researchers, transport engineers, urban planners, and anyone with a passion for solving mobility challenges in India. Teams of up to 5 members can register.

Phase 1:

Use live BMTC and Namma Yatri trip data to:

  • Predict bus arrival times
  • Estimate travel times for autorickshaw trips

Phase 2:

Challenge Overview

Create a functional prototype demonstrating seamless identity verification where an EU citizen, using their Digital Identity Wallet, would like to access a data resource from an Indian organisation registered in MOSIP (or vice-versa).

Eligibility

  • Open to residents of India, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, European Union countries and Switzerland.
  • Teams can have up to five members.
  • A given person can be a member of only one team.

Rules of Participation

  • Register and sign up on GitHub
  • Only one repository per team.
  • One submission per team; in the form of a presentation explaining the solution and its replicability accompanied with a running demo.

Data Access and Use

  • Data is for competition use only and must remain private.
  • Any personal identifiable information in the data must not be revealed.
  • Open-Source code should be used whenever possible, provided such use is permitted by code owners.

Prizes

  • The representative of the winning team will be invited to an event in Europe or an Indo-Pacific country to present the solution.

  • Open Source code can be used, provided such use is permitted by the owners of the open source code.

Prizes

First Prize: Rs. 2.5 lakhs
Second Prize: Rs. 1.5 lakhs
Special recognition prize of Rs. 25,000 to the remaining three finalists.

What is the contest?

The challenge calls for innovative, data-driven solutions that improve how people move across Bengaluru using buses, autorickshaws, and more. Deep dive into real-world transport data to simulate and solve the city’s multimodal journey puzzle.

Who can participate?

Coders, students, data scientists, researchers, transport engineers, urban planners, and anyone with a passion for solving mobility challenges in India. Teams of up to 5 members can register.

Phase 1:

Use live BMTC and Namma Yatri trip data to:

  • Predict bus arrival times
  • Estimate travel times for autorickshaw trips

Phase 2:

Symposium

The Symposium on Data for Public Good is an annual convening hosted by the Centre of Data for Public Good (CDPG). The event provides a platform to share best practices, showcase innovations, and build consensus around scalable, interoperable, and ethical data infrastructures that serve the public interest.

This initiative is aligned with national efforts on Digital Public Infrastructure, open standards, and responsible AI and is a national platform for dialogue, learning, and collaboration on the responsible and impactful use of data. It aims to:
