We work in the setting where an adversary links together\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">t\\geq 2<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-2-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>\u00a0anonymized datasets in which a user of interest participates, based on the user&#8217;s known quasi-identifiers, which motivates the use of\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">\\ell<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-3-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-diversity as the notion of dataset anonymity. We first argue that in the worst case, such linkage attacks can reveal the exact sensitive attribute of the user, even when each dataset respects\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">\\ell<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-4-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-diversity, for moderately large values of\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">\\ell<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-5-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>. This issue motivates our definition of (approximate)\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">(\\ell,\\delta)<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-6-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-diversity &#8212; a parallel of (approximate)\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">(\\epsilon,\\delta)<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-7-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-differential privacy (DP) &#8212; which simply requires that a dataset respect\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">\\ell<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-8-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-diversity, with high probability. We then present a mechanism for achieving\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">(\\ell,\\delta)<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-9-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-diversity, in the setting of independent and identically distributed samples. Next, we establish bounds on the degradation of\u00a0<span class=\"MathJax_Preview\">(\\ell,\\delta)<\/span><span id=\"MathJax-Element-10-Frame\" class=\"MathJax MathJax_Processing\" tabindex=\"0\"><\/span>-diversity, via a simple &#8220;composition theorem,&#8221; similar in spirit to those in the DP literature, thereby showing that approximate diversity, unlike standard diversity, is roughly preserved upon linkage.
