In India, agriculture is not only a\nsignificant contributor to the national economy but also a source of livelihood for a\nsubstantial portion of the population. According to the latest statistics (FY 2021-22) from the\n<strong>Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DAFW)<\/strong> , agriculture contributes\napproximately <strong>18.8 %<\/strong>  to India&#8217;s Gross Value Added (GVA), making it a crucial sector for\neconomic growth and development. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/india\/fao-in-india\/india-at-a-glance\/en\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Food and Agricultural Organisation(FAO) reports<\/a> , India is the world&#8217;s largest producer of milk, pulses and jute and ranks as the\nsecond largest producer of rice, wheat, sugarcane, groundnut, vegetables, fruit and cotton.<\/p>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig1.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\">Fig 1: Percentage share of Agriculture to GVA<\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>What is the problem?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>However, the productivity and sustainability of agricultural systems face numerous\nchallenges, among which plant diseases pose a significant threat<\/p>\n\n<p>Plant diseases have significant implications for crop yield and the agricultural economy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reduced Crop Yield<\/strong> : Diseased plants often have lower photosynthetic efficiency, leading\nto reduced growth and yield. <strong>Fungal infections<\/strong>, for instance, can cause premature death of\nplant tissues, affecting overall productivity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/plant-production-protection\/about\/en#:~:text=Every%20year%2C%20up%20to%2040,at%20least%20USD%2070%20billion.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FAO<\/a>  states that plant diseases can cause up to\n<strong>40% reduction<\/strong>  in crop yields globally, highlighting the urgent need for effective disease\nmanagement strategies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quality Loss<\/strong> : Diseases can impact the quality of harvested crops, making them unsuitable\nfor consumption or commercial use. This not only affects farmers but also consumers and\nindustries relying on these crops.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic Loss<\/strong> : Crop diseases result in economic losses for farmers due to reduced yields\nand the costs associated with disease management practices, including pesticides and other\ncontrol measures. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/plant-production-protection\/about\/en#:~:text=Every%20year%2C%20up%20to%2040,at%20least%20USD%2070%20billion.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FAO<\/a>  the loss in global production causes 200 billion dollars\nglobally.\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig2.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/images\/plantproductionandprotectionlibraries\/default-album\/fao's-work-on-plant-production-and-protectionc0e1ca91-75b6-4b56-9942-065277b6b74a.png?sfvrsn=8f629a6_11\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FAO by UN<\/a> <\/figure>\n\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Food Security Concerns<\/strong> : Plant diseases threaten global food security. With a growing\npopulation, ensuring healthy and disease-free crops is crucial to meet the increasing food\ndemand worldwide. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/plant-production-protection\/about\/en#:~:text=Every%20year%2C%20up%20to%2040,at%20least%20USD%2070%20billion.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FAO<\/a>  estimates that the world will need <strong>50 % more food by 2050<\/strong>  to feed\nthe increasing global population in the context of natural resource constraints, environmental\npollution, ecological degradation and climate change. This means we have to produce more\nwith less by increasing productivity and healthy diets, reducing crop and food loss, and\nsaving natural resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3><strong>What do we know?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There has been a huge number of strides seen in plant pathology from 1888 till 2015. Various\ndangerous diseases among agricultural plants have been discovered in that time period.<\/p>\n\n<p>One such instance is the discovery of blight disease in the potato plants. According to an\n<a href=\"https:\/\/ipm.cahnr.uconn.edu\/early-blight-and-late-blight-of-potato\/#:~:text=It%20was%20first%20reported%20in,the%20first%20fungicide%20was%20discovered.\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a>  by <strong>College of Agriculture, Health and Natural resources, University of\nConnecticut<\/strong> , blight disease variants were first reported in the 1830s in Europe and in the\nUnited States of America.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Great Hunger of Ireland<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Potato Blight is famous for being the cause of the 1840s Irish Potato Famine, when a million\npeople starved and a million and a half people emigrated. Late blight continued to be a\ndevastating problem until the 1880s when the first fungicide was discovered. In recent years,\nit has re-emerged as a problem. It is favoured by cool, moist weather and can kill plants\nwithin two weeks if conditions are right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig3.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\">Source: Kaggle \u2013 Plant Village Dataset<\/figure>\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:10px;\">Farmers encounter several challenges when it comes to identifying and managing plant\ndiseases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early Detection Difficulties<\/strong> : Traditional symptoms of diseases often become visible\nonly at later stages of infection. When farmers notice these symptoms, the condition\nmight have spread significantly, making it harder to control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Variability in Symptoms<\/strong> : Diseases can manifest differently based on factors like\nplant species, soil conditions, and climate. Recognizing these variations requires a\nkeen eye and experience, which not all farmers possess.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time and Resource Constraints<\/strong> : Conducting manual inspections across extensive\nfarmlands is time-consuming and labour-intensive. Farmers may need more resources\nto inspect each plant regularly, leading to delayed detection and response.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-top:10px;\">Traditional methods of disease detection, such as visual inspection and manual diagnosis,\nhave their limitations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Subjectivity<\/strong> : Visual inspection relies on the observer&#8217;s expertise and may be\nsubjective. Different individuals might interpret symptoms differently, leading to\ninconsistencies in diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-Consuming<\/strong> : Manual inspection of crops is a time-consuming process,\nespecially in large agricultural fields. This delay in detection can allow diseases to\nspread rapidly, leading to substantial crop damage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dependency on Environmental Conditions<\/strong> : Weather conditions, lighting, and other\nenvironmental factors can affect the visibility of disease symptoms. This dependency\ncan further complicate accurate disease diagnosis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-top:10px;\">Early and accurate disease detection is crucial for preventing yield loss and optimizing\nresource use.<\/p>\n\n<h3>How Modern Technology can help us with this problem?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real\nwealth, good morals &#038; happiness.&#8221;<\/strong>  &#8211; Thomas Jefferson, 3rd United States President<\/p>\n<p>With the advent of technology, particularly smartphones and Artificial Intelligence (AI), there\nexists a remarkable opportunity to revolutionize the way we approach disease detection in\ncrops. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/467163\/forecast-of-smartphone-users-in-india\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a>  , the number of smartphone users in India was estimated to\nreach over <strong>one billion in 2023<\/strong>. It was estimated that by 2040, the number of smartphone\nusers in India will reach <strong>1.55 billion.<\/strong>  Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/agriculture\/our-insights\/how-agtech-is-poised-to-transform-india-into-a-farming-powerhouse\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survey<\/a>  shows that <strong>70 \u2013 80%<\/strong>  of the farmers in\nIndia have access to a smartphone. AI into smartphone apps for plant disease detection\nenhances accessibility, affordability, and efficiency, empowering farmers with tools to protect\ntheir crops and livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3>Let\u2019s see it from a farmer\u2019s perspective<\/h3>\n<p>Imagine a farmer noticing something strange with their plants \u2014 maybe they have spots or\nlook unhealthy. In case they are not familiar with the observation, they can open up an app on\ntheir smartphone, point the camera at the plant, and snap a picture. Upload to it the\napplication.<\/p>\n<p>Now there are 2 possible approaches the application can take:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><p>With the help of advanced image processing models trained using an extensive\nsample space of images, the AI under the hood analyses the image and gives an\naccurate response about the malignity and the precautionary measures<\/p>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig4.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n<\/li>\n<li><p>The app sends the image to a server where AI models are present and they analyse the\nimage and send back a response with the diagnosis and a feasible solution to alleviate\nthe symptoms. If the AI does not recognise the symptom, it sends the image to a plant\npathology lab or expert and gets back along with their advice.<\/p>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig5.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Such an AI-driven approach empowers farmers with rapid and scalable solutions, enhancing\ntheir ability to protect crops and ensure food security. AI-driven disease classification not\nonly expedites the detection process but also provides valuable insights, enabling farmers to\noptimize resources.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits of using such AI detection systems are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Timely Disease Detection<\/strong> : AI enables early detection of diseases, allowing farmers\nto implement timely interventions, preventing extensive crop damage and ensuring\nhigher yields.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Precision Agriculture<\/strong> : AI facilitates precision agriculture by enabling targeted\napplication of treatments reducing the use of pesticides and fertilizers, which\ncontributes to environmental sustainability.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increased Productivity<\/strong> : By mitigating crop losses, AI-driven disease management\nenhances agricultural productivity, supporting farmers&#8217; livelihoods and contributing to\neconomic growth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environmental Conservation<\/strong> : Reduced use of chemical inputs due to targeted\ntreatments minimizes environmental pollution, benefiting ecosystems and\nbiodiversity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data-Driven Insights<\/strong> : AI systems generate valuable data and insights, enabling\ndata-driven decision-making for farmers, agricultural researchers, and policymakers,\nleading to informed agrarian practices and policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>Farm Forensics \u2013 The Sherlock of Agriculture<\/h3>\n\n<p>The first method for the use case of detecting potato blight disease is demonstrated here by\nFarm Forensics, which employs a basic Deep Learning model called a Convolution Neural\nNetwork (CNN).<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-6\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig6.png\" alt=\"\"><\/div><div class=\"col-md-6\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig7.png\" alt=\"\" data-pagespeed-url-hash=\"3325028143\" onload=\"pagespeed.CriticalImages.checkImageForCriticality(this);\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dataforpublicgood.org.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Fig8.png\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\n<h3>Future seems bright for the Sherlock of Agriculture<\/h3>\n\n<p><strong>Farm Forensics<\/strong>  is a simple to use web-based utility, still in its nascent stages and aims to\ncover most of the agricultural plants\u2019 diseases and help the farmers. It aims to connect\ndomain experts and deliver accurate knowledge to the farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The future of AI in agriculture is promising, with ongoing research and innovation poised to\nrevolutionize the industry further. Advancements in AI algorithms, coupled with the\nproliferation of IoT devices and sensors in agricultural settings, will enable more\ncomprehensive and real-time monitoring of crops. AI-powered predictive models will\nanticipate disease outbreaks, optimize irrigation, and enhance farm management.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAgriculture changes the landscape more than anything else we do. It alters the\ncomposition of species. We don&#8217;t realize it when we sit down to eat, but that is our most\nprofound engagement with the rest of nature.\u201d <\/strong> &#8211; Michael Pollan, American author and\njournalist<\/p>\n\n<p>As we move forward, embracing the full potential of AI in agriculture and disease\nmanagement will be crucial.
