of the landscape is undergoing transformation either naturally or due to human interference, giving rise to Land Cover Land Use Change (LCLUC). Expanding urban regions and consequent LCLUC have emerged as one of the major anthropogenic sources of global environmental degradation, bringing numerous stresses to landscapes, vegetation, habitats, water, etc. LCLUC at a sub-continent to global level can be monitored through high temporal and low spatial resolution data, such as those obtained from Landsat at 30 m or MODIS Terra\/Aqua at 250 m spatial resolution. These satellites improve the ability to map large areas of Earth\u2019s surface quickly due to their wider IFOV and inexpensively. However, different land cover (LC) types jointly occupy a single pixel, and the resulting spectral measurement is a composite of the individual spectra. The intrinsic scale of spatial variation in LC is usually finer than the scale of sampling imposed by the image pixels. Due to scale-resolution mismatch, the spatial resolution of the details on the ground is less than what is required, leading to sub-pixel heterogeneity, imposing limitations in modelling with these data sets. The talk will present some attempts to resolve the mixed pixel problem and also discuss some of the emerging challenges in geospatial Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) and Associate Faculty at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIIT Bangalore. He is a Senior Member IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, NY, USA) and Senior Member ACM (Association for Computing Machinery, NY, USA), and is the Former Infosys Foundation Career Development Chair Professor. He is the Convenor of Spatial Computing Laboratory at IIIT Bangalore.<\/p><p>Dr. Uttam holds a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) Degree in Computer Science &amp; Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University Belgaum, Diploma in Advanced Computing from CDAC Pune, Master of Science (MS) Degree in Geoinformation Science from University of Twente, The Netherlands and Ph.D. in Algorithms for Geospatial Data Analysis from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He earned professional certifications in Data Science (Computational Data Analytics) and Machine Learning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); in Big Data from Stanford University; and in Spatial Computing &amp; Geospatial Intelligence from Pennsylvania State University, USA.<\/p><p>He worked as a Project Assistant and as a Research Associate at IISc, Bangalore, and was a Visiting Scientist at GISE Lab, Department of Computer Science &amp; Engineering, IIT Bombay. The prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore appointed Dr. Uttam as a Faculty member in the Information Systems area. He moved to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Mountain View, California, USA as a NASA Postdoctoral Fellow, and successively served as a Visiting Scientist at NASA Ames \/ USRA for almost 4 years. Subsequently, he secured an appointment to a Researcher position in the Department of Biomedical Data Science, School of Medicine at Stanford University.<\/p><p>He has published 35 research papers in national\/international journals, 23 book chapters, 96 papers in conference proceedings and 8 technical reports. He has delivered 108 invited guest lectures by different institutions and organizations in India and abroad. He is the reviewer of 30 national and international scientific journals, reviewer for several conferences, and has served as session chair and judge in several conferences and competitions.
